Corus Radio launches iPhone app

The new app comes with a 'shake the shuffle' feature for users and sponsorship opps for advertisers that include pre-roll placements and embedded DART tags on each of Corus's 52 radio stations' landing pages.

Corus Entertainment is making its 52 radio stations available to iPhone users through a new iPhone Corus Radio app, making it the first Canadian radio broadcaster to feature a native iPhone streaming application.

Teaming with streaming partner US-based Stream the World, who built the app for Corus and is providing the content distribution network for its online audio, the Corus Radio application soft launched last week to several thousand downloads prior to officially launching at sixth place in the iPhone Top Free Applications for music in Apple’s iTunes app store.

In addition to compatibility with the 600,000 iPhones sold in Canada to date, it also works with iPod Touch, which currently has about 80% of the country’s portable music device market share.

Streaming in Dolby Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format with low data consumption to facilitate usage over the 3G network, listeners can search Corus stations by call letters or by city, or can shake the device to be offered a random Corus radio station through the now-popular ‘shake the shuffle’ feature.

Sponsorship opportunities are available through embedded DART tags in each of Corus’s 52 radio stations’ landing pages. Short video pre-roll placements are also in the works, as well, but only if it can be done without significant additional data usage costs.
