The Weather Network launches on connected TV

Videos, personalized forecasts and enhanced weather content are available on the new offering from Pelmorex Media.

Pelmorex Media Inc.-owned The Weather Network has announced it is launching its weather application on several connected TV models, including Samsung, LG and Panasonic.

With features like weather videos, the ability for users to personalize locations they see forecasts for and zoom in to get information for areas as close as one kilometre away, the connected TV offering features many of the same pieces as The Weather Network’s mobile and web apps.

Naomi Lipowski, director of iTV and TV emerging technologies, Pelmorex Media Inc., tells MiC the new connected TV offering will include custom advertising options in the future, but currently features IAB standard units like expandable banner ads and pre-roll videos on its Force of Nature video series. Sponsorship of its connected TV ad placements is currently held by Naples and Marco Island Tourism.

She adds The Weather Network wanted to launch on connected TVs now because of the fast expansion of the market. There were one billion sets installed in 2013, with that number expected to grow to two million by 2017, according to numbers provided by Pelmorex Media.
