Two new dramas are coming to Citytv.
The Murders and Rex (pictured) will both debut on the Rogers Media-owned network in 2019. Production on both began this week (The Murders is shot in Vancouver; Rex is being filmed in St. John’s). Neither programs were part of Rogers’ 2018/19 Upfront.
The Murders follows a rookie homicide detective who looks for redemption in her work after her negligence led to the death of a fellow officer. The series stars Jessica Lucas (Gotham) in the lead role, alongside Lochlyn Munro (Riverdale), Dylan Bruce (Orphan Black), Terry Chen (Jessica Jones), Luvia Petersen (Ghost Wars) and Venus Terzo (Arrow).
Rex also focuses on a detective, portrayed by John Reardon (Van Helsing), working alongside his hardworking police dog. The series also stars Mayko Nguyn (Killjoys) and Enrico Colantoni (Flashpoint). The eight-episode, 60-minute procedural is based on the long-running international hit series Rex, a Cop’s Best Friend.
While most of City’s new shows this fall have been in the comedy genre (it’s picked up U.S. comedies Rel, The Cool Kids and the reboot of Murphy Brown), these series will join a growing number of darker, crime-themed dramas, all City originals. Last month, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco debuted, while the second series of mob drama Bad Blood premieres tonight.
