The Rookie debuts on top: Numeris

Election night coverage also brought in big ratings for several networks.

The Rookie is an early winner in this year’s fall premiere season, according to Numeris data for the week of Sept. 20 to 26.

The fourth season premiere of CTV’s police procedural was the top ratings earner nationally, with top-five rankings in the Toronto/Hamilton and Edmonton markets.

Other premieres that had a strong showing were Survivor, a three-hour block of the three FBI shows, The Masked Singer and New Amsterdam.

The other big ratings draw that week was coverage of the federal election results. As different networks’ broadcasts were split in different ways on Numeris’ rankings, a network-to-network comparison isn’t quite apt, but the numbers do show that news coverage was a big draw. Global’s 8 p.m. timeslot drew an average minute audience of 1.583 million viewers, with 1.502 million staying tuned for the 9 p.m. slot, while an average of 1.415 million Canadians tuned in to CBC’s coverage from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

In other election-night broadcasts, CBC’s late coverage from 11 p.m. to 1:45 a.m. earned 1.016 million viewers, CTV’s coverage before polls closed earned 1.001 million viewers and CBC’s early coverage earned 943,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, in Quebec, TVA’s adaptation of The Masked Singer continued to be the top draw with 1.696 million viewers.
