While it eventually had to be called off, this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships continued to be one of the biggest draws for Canadian audiences over the holidays.
Before the tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19 outbreaks among the teams, the first preliminary game between Canada and Czechia on Boxing Day drew just under 2 million viewers for TSN nationally. It also topped the ratings across the five biggest Anglophone markets.
Sports content performed well during a light holiday TV schedule, with CTV’s early NFL broadcast – taking place right before the World Junior game – being the second-most viewed program of the week nationally, with the late game in fifth. History’s The Curse of Oak Island also benefited from audiences looking for something to watch on Boxing Day, coming in third nationally and reaching the top five in Edmonton and Vancouver/Victoria.
In Quebec, this year’s broadcast of comedian Jean-Marc Parent’s La Floride de JMP special was the top-rated program, followed by Radio-Canada’s Discussions avec mes parents.
