On Sunday, Twitter managers asked some of their fired employees to come back, as reported by Bloomberg. People familiar with the matter, told the news outlet that some people have been let go by mistake and were neccesary to to build new features desired by Elon Musk.
On Friday, Musk slashed, by some estimates, up to half of Twitter’s workforce with little notice, a decision he defended by tweeting that brands had begun pulling ads, leading to what he called a “massive drop in revenue.”
Meanwhile, Volkswagen, General Motors, Pfizer, Audi, Ford Motors, General Mills and Mondelez halted Twitter advertising and media agencies such as IPG and Havas Media advised their clients to pause all Twitter activity.
Musk tweeted that the layoffs were needed as “unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day.” The layoffs began on Friday.
Cam Gordon, Twitter Canada’s head of brand strategy, and Jennifer Bairos Hofer, the country’s head of marketing, were amongst those let go. They informed MiC of their terminations via email, and Gordon’s LinkedIn note on Friday echoes the posts of many Tweeps, “this was an extremely tough day and it hurts to see so many incredible people go. I feel fortunate to have worked with some of the most smart, creative, curious, and fun people in the industry.”
Musk has publicly stated that “everyone exited was offered three months of severance, which is 50% more than legally required.” Addressing the platform’s trust, safety and moderation, he shared a Tweet by Yoel Roth, the platform’s head of safety and integrity, stating that Twitter’s “core moderation capabilities remain in place.”
Layoffs were one of the concerns media agency execs had previously raised with MiC, given the potential to impact both brand safety and platform reputation.
