Samsung has made Samsung News available to Canadian users, launching the app in beta.
Samsung News presents a feed of news content from a range of international, national and local outlets. Users also have a “following” tab, where they can customize the locations, topics and news outlets they are most interested in to customize their news feed.
The app will also deliver a pair of “briefings” daily, featuring a list of top stories curated by a team of Samsung editors. Finally, Samsung News also features a selection of news and entertainment podcasts, which can be listened to directly in the app.
“With Samsung News, Canadians can enjoy access to a timely, curated selection of news tailored to their individual preferences,” said Jihoon Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Canada. “We recognize many Canadians are increasingly consuming news on their devices and we are proud to offer Galaxy users a seamless, personalized news experience in the palm of their hand.”
The app is also ad-supported, with units appearing natively within the feed. Ads can be personalized, though users have the ability to turn this option on or off the first time they open the app.
Samsung News replaces Samsung Free, an app that came pre-loaded on Galaxy devices and aggregated TV, news, podcast and game content for users. Galaxy devices that already have Free installed will have it automatically updated to News, while other users can download it directly from the Samsung Galaxy app store. The Samsung News beta is currently only available on select Galaxy devices, but will be rolled out to all devices in the near future.
