Talk and hits are tops in Canada’s biggest radio markets

Across the country, consolidation and staff cuts continue to be an issue. In the PPM markets, there is some discussion concerning sample sizes. Sadly, the good old days in radio are gone and stations are struggling to maximize revenue.

Still, radio remains popular, with an average weekly reach of 85%. Out of home listening represents 49% of tuning, while 10% comes from AM/FM live radio streaming. Let’s forge on.

The new PPM release from Numeris completes the thirteen-week period covering May 29 to Aug. 27.

Toronto

Bragging rights at the top of the ratings heap go to CBC Radio One, delivering an 11.5% share, though that is down from 12.6%. It is followed by CHFI with 11% and Q107 with 10.6%.

CHUM is on top for women 25 to 54 with a 12.6% share (up from 11.2%) followed by CHFI at 11.2%. For men in the same age group, CityNews 680 leads with a 9.5% share, though it is followed closely by Q107 at 9.4%.

Q107 is well out in front for men 18 to 34 with a 16.4% share (down from 17.6%). CHFI tops the list for  women 18 to 34 at a 22.1% share, followed by BOOM at 10.9%.

Vancouver

Global News station CKNW grabs the top spot with a 14.5% share of hours tuned, up from 12.5%.

Taking the top spot for women 25 to 54 is Virgin Radio with a 19% share. CKNW holds the lead for men 25 to 54, delivering a 13.9%% share.

CKNW is also out in front for men 18 to 34 with a 13.1% share of hours tuned, followed by Move at 12.7%. When it comes to women in the same age group, rock station The Fox is number one with an impressive 25% share.

Edmonton

Hits station Up 99.3 takes the number one spot, posting a 9.6% share of hours tuned.

Adult contemporary station 102.3 Now holds the top spot for women 25 to 54, delivering a 16.9% share (down from 18.2%). Now also tops the list for men in the same age group with a 11.1% share, followed by the Bear and K97, both at 10.3%.

For men 18 to 34, Now is well out in front at 18.2% (up from 13.7%). CISN Country led with women 18 to 34 delivering a healthy 19.9% share.

Calgary

Classic hits station XL 103 leads the way with a 11.1% share.

Top 40 station 90.3 AMP Radio is most popular with women 25 to 54, delivering a 12.3 % share. For men 25 to 54, alternative rock station X92.9 rules with a 14.2% share (up from 12.9%).

For men 18 to 34, 101.5 Today Radio delivers a substantial 25.8% share (up from 16.9%). XL 103 is tops with women 18 to 34, posting a 17.8% share.

Montreal

Among Francophone audiences, talk station CHMP is number one with a 21% share, though it is down from 23.5%. For English speakers, talk station CJAD 800 is at the top with a 26.5% share, up from 23.7%.

CHMP is also tops with Francophone women 25 to 54, delivering a 16.8 % share (down from 19.6%), followed closely by 105.7 Rythme FM at 16.7%. CHMP is also in front for Francophone men with a 22.3% share, down from 28.6%.

For Anglophone women 25 to 54,The Beat 92.5 is way out in front with a huge 36.5% share (though it is down from 38.8%). For men, CHOM is number one at 18.9% (up from 17.2%), followed by The Beat 92.5 at 17.2%.
