CBC has expanded its portfolio of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels with the launch of CBC Comedy, showcasing a mix of scripted series, stand-up performances and sketch shows.
It is now available through CBC Gem, and will be added to LG Channels, The Roku Channel and Samsung TV Plus in the late fall.
The channel will air a mix of old and current series, including Kim’s Convenience, Schitt’s Creek, Run the Burbs, Son of a Critch, Mr. D, TallBoyz and the Baroness von Sketch Show. It will also air stand up comedy specials such as Comedy Night with Rick Mercer, as well as showcases from the Halifax Comedy Festival and Winnipeg Comedy Festival. New seasons of current shows will continue to stream exclusively on Gem.
“CBC Comedy is our new go-to destination for the best comedy Canada has to offer, providing free, nonstop access to CBC’s acclaimed library of comedy from authentic original voices, and sketch and stand-up that reflects the times with satire and wit,” said Sally Catto, general manager of entertainment, factual and sports at CBC.
CBC entered the FAST arena late last year with CBC News Explore, featuring a mix of its flagship news broadcasts like The National and The Fifth Estate alongside new programming like About That.
CBC first announced that it would be adding a comedy channel to its FAST portfolio during its Upfronts presentation in the summer. It also announced a dedicated news channel for British Columbia, which is now scheduled to launch next year, with CBC News channels for other regions of Canada also in the works.
