Radio-Canada’s Bye-bye is once again the undisputed winner of this year’s New Year’s Eve broadcasts, and it gave a big boost to the rest of the channel’s programming, according to Numeris data for the week of Dec. 27 to Jan. 2.
In Quebec, the annual sketch show looking at the year that was brought in 4.862 million viewers. In fact, the full slate of Radio-Canada’s New Year’s Eve programming dominated the top five French programs, with Infoman, En direct de l’univers, Les coulisses du Bye bye 2021 and À l’année prochaine all earning between 1.9 and 3.6 million viewers. It was also one of the rare occasions when TVA had been bumped out of the top five in Quebec.
In English Canada, the Jan. 2 episode of The Rookie topped the ratings nationally, followed by another Team Canada game in the later-cancelled World Junior Hockey Championships. Citytv’s broadcast of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve brought in 1.216 million viewers at third, with the New Year’s Day edition of CTV Evening News the next day in fourth. CBC’s New Year’s Eve special brought in 1.184 million viewers nationally, good for fifth.
Regionally, the top spot was split between New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (Toronto/Hamilton, Montreal, Vancouver/Victoria) and the World Junior Game (Edmonton and Calgary).
