King Charles’ coronation draws 7.6 million viewers: Numeris

Despite the time difference, a significant portion of the audience also tuned in live.

The coronation of King Charles III on May 6 turned into a major TV event in Canada.

According to Numeris data, 7.6 million Canadians watched at least part of the coronation proceedings on TV. In addition, Numeris pointed out that 71% of viewing was done live. This is despite the time difference, which had the proceedings airing at 6 a.m. EST and 3 a.m. PST on a Saturday morning.

CBC, CTV, CityTV and Global all broadcast specials covering the coronation live beginning at 4 a.m. EST.

Audiences on TV peaked around 9:30 a.m. EST, with an AMA of just over 5 million. According to Numeris figures, over the previous four Saturdays, the typical AMA for that viewing period was around 3 million.

The differences in viewing were more stark earlier in the morning: on the day of the coronation, the AMA hit 4 million just before 8 a.m. EST, roughly double what it was at the same time over the previous four Saturdays. At 5:30 a.m. EST on coronation day, when audiences were typically at their lowest, the AMA was just under 2.5 million.

By comparison, this year’s Super Bowl broadcast had an AMA of 8.6 million viewers, with 17.6 million unique viewers. The final game of this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lighting had an AMA of 4.4 million
