The Edmonton Oilers may have lost to the Florida Panthers to end the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday, but according to Numeris, linear TV in Canada was the real winner of the series.
Sportsnet’s coverage of the decisive Game 7 between the two teams, earlier this week, delivered the network’s most-watched broadcast ever with an average of 7.55 million viewers and a reach of 39% of the population. The broadcast is also the most-watched program ever on Sportsnet+, reaching 1.93 million streamers. Prior to puck drop, Sportsnet’s Hockey Central pre-game show delivered an average audience of 4.1 million.
Linear TV showed its strength when it comes to live sports broadcasts. Numeris found that 16.7 million Canadians were reached across a four-station aggregate of Sportsnet National+, CBC Total, Citytv Total and TVA Sports+. The average audience size was 8.6 million viewers, with 43.1% reached in English Canada and 43.6% in francophone Quebec.
Naturally, the biggest audience was in Edmonton where 43.2% watched the entire game and 63.3% caught some part of the action. Reach was strong across the country with the market in Edmonton’s rival city, Calgary, at 52.5%, Vancouver and Victoria at 44.3%, the balance of Western provinces at 48.3%, Toronto and Hamilton 40.1%, the balance of Ontario at 46.8%, and Atlantic Canada at 41.2%.
From April 20 to June 24, the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Sportsnet reached 25.4 million Canadians, 66% of the population, and averaged 1.5 million viewers.
