Canadians still watching TV on TVs

A new study shows people are reluctant to 'cut the cord' as the number of cable subscriptions continues to increase.

Despite an increasing number of online viewing options, Canadians are slow to get rid of their cable TV subscriptions, according to a new study by Ottawa-based research and consulting firm Boon Dog Professional Services.

There was an increase of 29,000 TV subscriptions in the second quarter of 2010, and 181,000 people switched from analogue to digital in the same time period, ending June 2010.

The report was published in Canadian Digital TV Market Monitor, Boon Dog’s quarterly research publication.

By the end of Q2, the number of digital subscriptions in Canada was 8.6 million, or 76% of all TV subscriptions, a 12% increase over the same time the previous year. 42% of those digital subscribers were HDTV-ready at the time of the study.

62% of those digital subscribers had access to VOD services.
