The 10th annual Canadian New Media Awards were handed out to the country’s top interactive media specialists last night, with Toronto’s Syncapse Corp winning company of the year.
The three-year-old company took home the hardware for its work in social media management, helping brands and agencies create and measure digital customer relationships.
Polar Mobile, based in Toronto, won promising new company of the year. Founded in Waterloo, ON., in 2007, Polar has created more than 300 apps for such companies as CBS Sports, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Time magazine.
There were six new awards this year, celebrating digital media division of the year, digital media technology of the year, best online program (series or film), community campaign of the year, interactive designer of the year and digital media woman of the year.
The awards are handed out annually to Canada’s best new media companies, campaigns and projects, and this year there were five times the number of nominees than last year, Jory Groberman, executive director, NextMedia, told MiC.
‘What’s reflected in the growth is the converging industries of online, mobile, advertising, broadcast and content production,’ he said. ‘Because of that convergent world, that’s what’s led to greater opportunity for collaborationg between those industries and to the increase in categories.’
Other big winners were Alon Marcovici, EVP, digital media, CTV, who won executive of the year for his work as part of the Olympic broadcast media consortium, and Vancouver-based XOMO Digital, the creator of the 2010 Guide, the official smartphone app of the 2010 Olympics.
The full list of winners is available on the CNMA website.
The awards followed the two-day NextMedia conference in Toronto.
