While the Omnicom agency held onto the largest share for the year, it didn’t post the most year-over-year growth.

OMD Canada has topped the 2016 RECMA activity volume report, posting the highest overall activity for the year.

The independent report measures buying and planning billings for traditional media, as well as non-traditional billings like digital and diversified services.

Overall, activity in the Canadian industry grew by 4% from 2015 to 2016. Staff in the industry grew by 9.4%, to 2,734.

The Omnicom agency had 12.5% share of activity in the market for the year, and grew 4% from 2015 to 2016.

Carat was second with a 11.6% share, while Mindshare was third with 10.3% and UM was fourth with 7.9%. PHD was fifth with a 7.5% share.

Despite OMD being at the top of the list, Dentsu Media and Jungle Media posted the highest growth rates from 2015 to 2016, at 21% and 18%, respectively.

On the negative side, Zenith’s growth rate dropped 67% year-over-year. Mediavest Spark (now Spark Foundry) shrank by 25%, Havas Media by 4% and Cossette Media by 2%.

Correction: This story previously only included the top five agencies and erroneously stated that Mindshare and UM were tied for the highest year-over-year growth. We regret the error.

Since the original issue of this report, RECMA updated its rankings, separating Touché! and PHD. This meant PHD dropped from #2 to #5 overall and Touché! moved to #11.
