Fast food restaurants dominated the top TV advertising category in Canada last week, according to media monitoring data from AdEase for Oct. 9-15.

A combination of factors likely spurred the fryer-heavy investment, including McDonald’s ongoing Monopoly contest promo, the Thanksgiving long weekend and the start of both the World Series and hockey season. With hamburgers, pizza and dish-free dinners top mind with TV viewers, advertisers delivered with a host of ads to tempt the nation.

Brand-wise, fabric care brand Downy dominated the advertiser category, followed by exercise gurus Peloton and, naturally, McDonald’s shoring up third place.

TV and streaming services were categorically a distant second, and Downy continued to invest in its in-wash scent booster campaign.

The biggest position gains were Dove soap in Vancouver (46 – 8); Alberta Depot in Calgary (533-9) and Today’s Shopping Choice in Montreal (25-6.)
