The Logic, a Canadian news outlet covering business and technology, is getting an influx of capital to expand its newsroom and business operations. The company has raised $4 million in a funding round led by FT Ventures, along with returning investors Relay Ventures, Four Cornerstones Capital and Roynat Capital.
This is the first Canadian investment by FT Ventures, which is the corporate venture arm of the Financial Times Group.
The Logic was launched in 2018 by David Skok, who was previously the associate editor of the Toronto Star and managing editor and vice-president of digital for The Boston Globe, and director of digital for Global News.
“The Financial Times is one of the world’s preeminent news organizations. We’re thrilled to have FT Ventures on board,” said Skok, The Logic’s CEO and editor-in-chief. “They have made clear that they value the quality and calibre of our work and our team, and they see the opportunity to help us continue to build a Canadian news organization that is world class.”
The $4 million investment will help finance The Logic’s growth, which has included an almost 60% increase in paid subscriptions in the last six months and 270% revenue growth in the last three years, the company reports.
While The Logic’s newsroom and business operations will remain independent, the news agency will now also work with FT Strategies, the FT’s media consultancy arm. Skok says this will help The Logic reach new readers, improve the experience of existing subscribers, and build its subscriptions, partnerships and events businesses.
“From the beginning we’ve built carefully and deliberately,” Skok said. “That will continue to be our approach. There’s no shortcut to winning readers’ trust. But now more than ever, Canadians need original journalism that helps them understand their rapidly changing world.”
