CBC News: Igalaaq partners with Inuit TV

The Northern broadcaster will begin airing on CBC on April 3.

CBC News: Igalaaq will begin airing on Inuit TV on April 3, an agreement that signals the broadcasters’ commitment to preserving and promoting Inuit language through programming they both share.

Inuit TV will have the rights to air CBC News: Igalaaq, while the public broadcaster will increase the reach of its Inuktitut-language supper-hour news broadcast.

Previously, CBC News: Igalaaq (which is broadcast daily at 6:00 pm from Iqaluit) was only available on CBC platforms, such as CBC Gem, cbc.ca/north, YouTube@CBCNorth and CBC TV. Now, a rebroadcast will air on Inuit TV the following day at 1:00 pm and again at 5:30. Launched in 2022, Intuit TV is a channel focusing on Inuit culture and language.

“Inuit TV is very pleased to work in partnership with CBC,” says Lucy Qavavauq, Co-CEO of Inuit TV. “Absolutely many talented and exceptionally knowledgeable Inuit have brought us here. Visionaries from almost two decades ago guided us to this point. Elders, youth, educators, language specialists and many Inuit who are passionate in keeping our language and culture to continue to strive and to always thrive. Countless volunteer board members throughout the years have been our foundation. Inuit TV plays an integral role in strengthening our Inuktut language and this agreement will help to reach our 80% Inuktut programming goal.”

“CBC North is committed to providing Indigenous language programming across the North,” added Mervin Brass, senior managing director of CBC North. “This partnership with Inuit TV supports our vision to strengthen Indigenous languages like Inuktitut through our programming.”
