Canadians were content to run on World Junior time over the holiday season, as they tuned in to TSN and TSN2 to watch the pre-medal action of the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship from Ufa, Russia.
With live puck-drop times ranging from 4:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET and rebroadcasts throughout the day, viewership on a game-to-game basis was down across the board for the four round robin games versus last year’s tournament which was hosted in Calgary and Edmonton and had more primetime slots. Despite this, BBM data shows that 8.3 million Canadians watched some or all of this year’s tournament so far.
Team Canada kicked off the tournament with a Boxing Day matchup against Germany that averaged 1.44 million viewers, down from last year’s Boxing Day opener against Finland, which netted 2.3 million viewers.
Even its yearly showdown against its archrivals the U.S. attracted fewer viewers this year, with 1.66 million compared to 2.8 million viewers for the New Year’s Eve showdown in 2012.
Canada’s New Year’s Eve clash with Russia was the most watched game of the 2013 tournament so far, with 2.5 million Canadians tuning in.
