Bell Media unwraps streamer, code-named ‘Project Latte’

The TV-focused SVOD will include HBO's back catalogue of programming.

Bell Media has named its Netflix Canada and shomi competitor, code-named “Project Latte.”

The rival streamer, to shortly launch, will focus on TV programming, not movies, and be available to all Canadians via set-top boxes, apps and the internet pending agreements with participating TV providers. The final name of the SVOD service will be unveiled when it is formally launched.

Rival shomi, also shortly to launch, will be available initially to Rogers and Shaw cable and Internet subscribers during a beta stage.

Project Latte will also feature 10,000 hours of TV fare, of which around 10% will be HBO programming from a recently inked back-catalogue deal.

There’s no word on pricing for the Canadian SVOD, which will offer marquee series like The SopranosThe Wire and Sex and the City for catch-up viewing.

The streamer will feature Canadian programming from Bell Media’s stable of assets, and additional foreign fare from content deals the broadcaster has with major Hollywood studios and indie studios.
