Tangerine will sponsor the first WNBA game in Canada

The game will feature the Minnesota Lynx, which has Canadian stars Bridget Carleton and Natalie Achonwa on its lineup.

The WNBA has announced detail of its first game to be held on Canadian soil, including Tangerine continuing its relationship with the league to be presenting sponsor of the game.

On May 13, the Chicago Sky will play against the Minnesota Lynx at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto in a preseason match-up. The Minnesota Lynx lineup features Canadian players Bridget Carleton and Natalie Achonwa, both of whom also represented the country during last year’s 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, taking their team to the semi-finals. The Chicago Sky won the WNBA Championship in 2021 and reached the semifinals last season, with a lineup featuring all-star players Kahleah Copper, Emma Meesseman, Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot.

Tangerine will be presenting sponsor of the game, as the bank enters its third year as the WNBA’s official banking partner in Canada.

“We’re proud to expand upon our commitment to women’s sport and female leadership,” said Gillian Riley, president and CEO of Tangerine. “We look forward to showcasing some of the world’s best basketball players on a new stage in Toronto.”

Tangerine was the first partner for the WNBA when it signed on in 2020, building on its relationships with the NBA and Toronto Raptors. It has been focused on providing new marketing and promotional opportunities to the league, as well as grow the game for women in Canada. Recently, Tangerine collaborated with WNBA/NBA joint initiative Her Time to Play on a clinic for young girls at the University of Toronto, where WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and Canadian WNBA star Kia Nurse attended.

Ticket information will be announced in the near future, but fans can sign up online to receive notifications and more info. The game will also be broadcast live on both Sportsnet and TSN.
