Friends of Canadian Broadcasting calls for temporary boycott of Meta

The advocacy group is hoping to force the tech giant to reverse course on blocking news in Canada.

Non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting (FRIENDS) is calling for users to stop using Instagram and Facebook next week.

The short-term boycott is a response to Meta restricting access to news content on Facebook and Instagram following the passage of the Online News Act. In posts on its website and social channels, FRIENDS is asking users to not use Facebook or Instagram on two days: Aug. 23 and 24.

“Meta is betting that Canadians will keep flocking back to their platforms, no matter how much disdain they demonstrate for our laws and for our media,” a statement on the FRIENDS website said. “But what if we stood up to their bullying once and for all?”

Passed in June, the Online News Act mandates that large tech platforms must negotiate with outlets over fair value for having new content on their platforms. Meta has maintained that it is removing news access for Canadian Facebook and Instagram users because it gets no economic value from users or outlets sharing news. Meta began the process of blocking news content earlier this month.

“[Two days] may seem like an eternity in social media time, but to Meta, it will seem even longer,” FRIENDS’ statement read. “At the end of the day, our eyeballs on their platforms are the most valuable commodity Meta has.”

FRIENDS aims at preserving Canadian voices in public broadcasting, news and culture.
