Rogers Sports & Media has shuttered its CityNews Ottawa radio station, formerly known as 1310NEWS, leaving a two-person digital team to continue to provide local news, weather, and traffic on Ottawa.CityNews.ca and its social platforms.
The closing includes laying off less than 10 newsroom employees. Rogers cites shrinking audiences and revenue along with regulatory challenges as the reasons behind the move.
In a statement to MiC, a Rogers Sports & Media spokesperson says, “We’ve made the difficult decision to close 1310 AM in Ottawa due to low audiences, declining revenue, and restrictive regulatory policies for AM radio. We deeply appreciate and thank our listeners, and all the employees and contributors for their dedication over the years.”
No other Rogers-owned radio or television stations are impacted by the closure.
At a time when trusted, local news is a priority for the media industry, the Ottawa station is just one of several recent media properties getting the chop. This includes the BCE announcement earlier this year that it would close or sell nine radio stations and Metroland’s decision last month to stop print editions of local newspapers.
