Spotify is launching a Yonge-Dundas billboard takeover his weekend, Friday to Sunday, to mark the release of its annual Loud & Clear report – and the impact the music streamer has had on the discoverability of Canadian artists, music purchasing and radio listening.
The Loud & Clear report is a resource that covers industry news and streaming economics such as what artists are generating money, how much, and how that has changed over time. The report states that last year, Canadian artists were discovered more than 3.8 billion times on Spotify and over 4,500 Canadian artists were added to editorial playlists. In addition, royalties generated by Canadian artists from Spotify exceeded $435 million CAD, more than double that of 2018. A majority (92%) of all royalties generated by Canadian artists on Spotify in 2023 were from listeners outside of Canada.
Other stats in the report include that the number of Canadian artists who generated over $50,000 CAD and the number of Canadian artists who generated over $100,000 CAD in royalties from Spotify alone more than doubled since 2017. About 40% of all royalties generated by artists in Canada on Spotify last year were by independent artists or labels. Royalties generated by artists in Canada from Spotify alone grew more than 15% compared to 2022, outpacing the country’s music industry revenue growth of 12% , according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
