The NHL reveals its content plans going forward

Social content, classic games and e-sports are all part of the league's programming strategy.

There’s a hockey-sized hole in the hearts of Canadians. It’s been a week since the NHL suspended its season in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there is no end date in sight for the league’s self-imposed pause.

But the NHL, which confirmed to MiC last week that it was also pressing pause on some partnered digital content (such as a co-branded interview series with Jägermeister), has unveiled an official plan for content in the interim, and much of it is free.

Starting today, the league will offer an increased slate of video, editorial and digital content on NHL.com, its app and across social (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok).

It will also make available a large collection of classic NHL games, long-form content and selections from its library of NHL Original Productions. Additionally, all games from the 2019-2020 regular season (so far) will be available for full replays.

Those game replays will also be available through NHL’s Canadian broadcast partner, Sportsnet, for streaming. According to the NHL, Sportsnet will also roll out more comprehensive hockey programming in the coming days.

The NHL is dubbing this phase of programming the “NHL Pause Binge.” Original programming includes behind-the-scenes specials such as Road to the NHL Winter Classic, Behind the Glass and NHL All Access. It will also showcase select classic games dating back to the 1950s. Short-form social programming will include This Day in History and Players to Watch: Next Gen, profiles, highlights and more.

Additionally, the NHL is hosting an online gaming championship, featuring the top players from EA Sports game NHL 20. The tournament is being hosted on the NHL’s digital platforms.
