CBC reports record numbers for the Paris Paralympic Games

Canadians spent an average of 1.2 million hours a day watching the Games, an increase of 119% from Tokyo 2020.

CBC has released the final audience numbers for the 12 days of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. According to Numeris, more than 11 million Canadians tuned in for coverage of the Games on CBC and Radio-Canada networks, with record increases noted across broadcast, digital and streaming platforms.

Canadians spent an average of 1.2 million hours a day watching CBC’s broadcast coverage, an increase of 119% from Tokyo 2020. They also consumed a record-breaking 614,000 hours of Paris 2024 content on CBC/Radio-Canada’s digital and streaming platforms, a 153% increase over Tokyo 2020. The time spent streaming Paralympics content on CBC Gem increased 537% from Tokyo 2020, with connected TV accounting for about 68% of the total time spent streaming Paris 2024 content on CBC Gem.

Over four million Canadians tuned into the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony on August 28 across English and French TV networks, a rise of 118% over the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony. On CBC, the Opening Ceremony drew an average minute audience of 216,000 among Canadians aged 2-plus, a 188% increase over the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony.

The Closing Ceremony also garnered a record audience of 3.2 million Canadians on September 8 across English and French TV networks, up 60% over the Tokyo 2020 Closing Ceremony. It brought in a 2-plus average minute audience of 194,000, a healthy increase of almost 100% over the Tokyo 2020 Closing Ceremony.

CBC/Radio-Canada will continue to be Canada’s Paralympic Network for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Games from March 6 to 15, 2026.
