Though the beginning of the game was like watching paint dry, Wednesday night’s MLS Eastern Conference game between Montreal Impact and Toronto FC went on to break a TSN/RDS record.
An average audience of more than one million viewers tuned into the game in its entirety across the two channels, with 595,000 on TSN and 429,000 on RDS. Those numbers were enough to make it Canada’s most-watched MLS game to date.
Overall more than 3.6 million unique viewers tuned in to watch the game at least in part, with audience levels peaking at 10:29 p.m. for the final minute of regular time.
Wednesday night’s audience nearly doubled the previous record of 587,000 on TSN and RDS for the Montreal-Toronto playoff game last October.
Playoff coverage continues with a match between Montreal and Toronto next Wednesday at 7 p.m. on TSN and 6:30 p.m. on RDS.
