MTM has released an infographic based on a poll that shows SVODs are the most popular way to view movies in Canada, with 53% of respondents picking them. According to MTM, 32% use a TV service, while only 3% visit a movie theatre.
However, the results differ when comparing the French-speaking people to the English-speaking Canadians. Francophones are more likely to go to the cinemas (6% vs. 2%) and watch TV (36% vs. 30%), while English speakers prefer SVODs (54% against 45%). Overall, men are more likely than women to see movies in a theatre (4% vs. 3%), as well as watch TV movies (33% vs. 30%), and women are the most likely to consume SVOD platforms, with 54% doing so on a weekly basis. About 50% of men watch movies on these services.
Older viewers are more likely to watch movies using a TV service, but younger viewers prefer SVODs. About 5% of 18 to 34-year-olds go to the theatre, while 19% watch TV and 63% use an SVOD. Those aged 35 to 49 like to consume content via SVODs (60%), while 28% watch TV and 2% go to the theatre. Approximately, 3% of adults aged 50 to 64 watch movies at the cinema, 38% on TV, and 46% on SVODs. Respondents over 65 prefer TV services (45%), followed by SVODs (34%), and movie theatres (2%).
MTM also discovered that Canadians who subscribe to SVOD services are more inclined to watch movies on a weekly basis. Some 71% of them subscribe to at least four SVODs, with 68% subscribed to three. Sixty-one percent subscribe to two, while 41% subscribe to just one.
Those who have a subscription to both SVOD and linear TV also tend to watch movies weekly on both channels. According to MTM, 60% of respondents have a subscription to both SVOD and linear TV, and 54% only to a TV service.
A total of 8,959 Canadians from all regions of the country participated in this MTM study. The surveys were conducted from Oct. 12 to Dec. 30 last year.
