The CBC has unveiled its slate of new podcasts it will be launching this spring and summer.
All the podcasts will be available on CBC Listen and other audio platforms such as Spotify. Some titles will also be streamed on the CBC Podcasts YouTube channel.
The programming includes Split Screen: Kid Nation (6 episodes), delves into the ethics of reality shows and is based on the controversial 2017 show Kid Nation, in which 40 children were taken to a makeshift village in the desert to fend for themselves and create their own society. The podcast includes interviews with former contestants, their families and the show’s creators. The first two episodes are available now on CBC Listen.
Broomgate: A Curling Scandal (6 episodes) will be released on May 6. Semi-professional curler and professional comedian John Cullen hosts this podcast that exposes the never-before-told story behind the scandal that rocked curling in 2015.
Set to premiere on May 13, Modi’s India: Understood (4 episodes, pictured) chronicles how Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi went from being barred from the U.S. to becoming one of the most powerful men in the world. Journalist Salimah Shivji will discuss Modi’s possible re-election and the accusations of complicity in religious violence that have dogged him.
The $6 Billion Gold Scam (9 episodes) tells the story of one of the biggest gold mining frauds of all time. Hosted by Suzanne Wilton, the podcast recalls the moment Canadian mining company Bre-X announced in 1995 that it had discovered a considerable amount of gold deep in the Indonesian jungle. It premieres on May 19.
CBC also plans to release Come By Chance (7 episodes) on June 4. The podcast follows the story of two men from a remote Newfoundland town who realized that they had been switched at birth. The program also features other cases of baby switching in rural Newfoundland.
Finally, Tested (6 episodes) premieres on July 15. Host Rose Eveleth explores the 100-year history of sex testing in elite sports through interviews with athletes, historians, scientists and doctors. This after athletics authorities announced last year new regulations that mean some athletes can’t compete in the female category unless they reduce their body’s natural testosterone levels.
CBC will also continue to run the podcasts: Commotion With Elamin Abdelmahmoud, Crime Story, The Dose, Front Burner, Q With Tom Power and Sickboy.
The new podcasts will also join seven other ad-supported titles focused on local communities that CBC News launched in January to reach broader audiences.
