Google searches on how to delete Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts have seen spikes in the U.S. since Meta announced on Tuesday that it will end its third-party data verification program.
According to Google Trends, related searches such as “alternative to Facebook,” “how to quit Facebook,” “how to delete Threads account,” and “how to delete Instagram account without logging in” have become top searches, with popularity increasing by more than 5,000% compared to previous periods. In particular, the “how to permanently delete facebook” search has hit a maximum score of 100, the highest level of interest possible on Google Trends.
Earlier this week, Meta’s chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan said the company is moving to the Community Notes model used by X, a feature that relies on crowdsourcing to flag potentially misleading content. By removing the fact-checking control, Meta will stop degrading verified content and, instead of overlaying full-screen warnings that users must click on before they can view a post, it will use a much less intrusive label that indicates additional information for those who want to see it. This change will be rolled out first in the U.S.
Meta’s original fact-checking program was launched in 2016 after years of misinformation proliferation and violent speech on its platforms. However, the company said it wasn’t working, especially in the U.S. Media experts believe the program gave advertisers more brand safety assurances, but now civic, political or moderate-risk content is bringing back brand safety concerns for companies investing in Meta’s platforms.
