History digs for new viewers

Shaw Media is promoting a new season of History’s top show from last fall, The Curse of Oak Island with a new multi-platform campaign.

The show, which revolves around the search for buried treasure on an island off the coast of Nova Scotia, is back with a new season on Nov. 15 at 10 p.m. Promotions ahead of the premiere have included digital and radio ads, TV spots and cracked floor decals with the tagline “it’s time to dig.” The cracked floor decals were placed in the underground shopping area at 2 Bloor St. East and Bloor and Islington to spark curiosity in the targeted demo of adults aged 25 to 54.

To complement the OOH activation, History will be running a 13-week “Clues to the Curse” watch-and-win contest beginning this Sunday. During each episode of the series a mystery word will appear on screen that viewers must submit through History’s Facebook page. Weekly grand prizes of $500 will be awarded, with a grand prize of $5,000 being handed out at the end of the season.

Cundari names president

Jennifer Steinmann has been promoted from managing director to president at Cundari, taking on full responsibilities for the Canadian operations of the agency.

Cundari hasn’t had a president since 2012, when Garry Lee left for Innocean Canada. Aldo Cundari, the agency’s founder, chairman and CEO who led operations with Steinmann as a partner, will remain in his current role, but will be shifting his focus towards expanding the agency into new locations across North America in 2016.

Bell to debut new comedy on CraveTV

Canadians will be able to catch new Bell original comedy Letterkenny on CraveTV two months before the show bows on Comedy. The show will begin streaming on the service on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, ahead of its spring linear debut.

Letterkenny is based on the web series Letterkenny Problems, which was created by actor Jared Keeso, who stars in Bravo’s 19-2.

CraveTV is currently available to Bell subscribers and partnering BDUs, but is being opened up to all Canadians at the start of 2016.

Lower spending expected this holiday season

According to a new report from SAS, one in five Canadians say they will spend less on the holidays this year than last year.

Canadians are also reportedly shopping more around the holiday discount cycle, with 22% saying they will buy on Black Friday and 17% planning to shop on Cyber Monday.

Though online retail has grown in recent years, 82% of Canadians said they plan to shop in store. Discount retailers were the top choice for Canadians when asked the types of places the plan to shop, followed by specialty retailers and eTailers.
