Ratings stay strong for Sportsnet and CBC in round two

While the number of Canadian teams in the playoffs have dwindled, the ratings on Sportsnet and CBC still held strong, with round two pulling in a higher average audience than round one.

Round two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs may have contained fewer Canadian teams than the first, but the games have still captured the attention of Canadians on both CBC and Sportsnet.

During round two, the two series featuring Canadians teams averaged 1.7 million viewers across the two networks. The most-watched game of the round was that between Ottawa and the New York Rangers on May 9, which pulled an average audience of 2.4 million viewers on Sportsnet and CBC. The overall round two average audience was 1.5 million viewers. That beats the round one average audience of 1.3 million viewers per game overall.

The two rounds combined have so far boasted an average minute audience of 1.38 million per game, up 117% from average viewership of 636,000 in 2016. Total reach also rose 24% from 2016 to 2017 to 24.9 million (up from 20.1 million).

No game during the second round has topped the second match between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals, which brought in an average audience of 3.62 million viewers on CBC. Last year’s most-watched game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs was the April 28 match of the Pittsburgh Penguins versus the Washington Capitals, which pulled in an average minute audience of 1.58 million on CBC.
