Raptors bring big views, Quebec’s biggest shows double: Numeris

Big Brother also drew big national attention.

While the Toronto Raptors’ comeback against the Boston Celtics didn’t quite end the way fans were hoping, the team’s fight back from two embarrassing defeats to then force game seven captured the attention of TV viewers coast-to-coast. For the week ended Sept. 13, the Raptors played three games: Sept. 7 (TSN), Sept. 9 (Sportsnet) and Sept. 11 (TSN). The two games on TSN averaged 1.96 million viewers per minute across the two broadcasts. The Sept. 9 game on Sportsnet, which ended in a double-overtime victory, drew 1.62 million viewers, making it the highest AMA of all single night programs for the week.

Big Brother managed to maintain near-identical audiences to the ones it pulled in across its three episodes the week before. But the prominence of the Raptors, as well as a special presentation of The Masked Singer on Sunday night managed to push America’s Got Talent further down from the top five – despite pulling in similarly high audiences the previous week.

Big viewership gains, however, were seen in the Quebec market.

Last week – and throughout most of the summer – the province’s biggest Francophone shows pulled in AMAs under 600,000. This week, only one series in the top five pulled in under one million viewers. That’s largely thanks to the return of some of Quebec’s most popular programs, like La voix and TVA’s popular La rentrée beginning-of-season kickoff special.

The impact of returning programs is best demonstrated in the popularity of TVA’s sophomore unscripted series, Un zoo pas comme les autres. The series has been a top-five show all summer, spending many weeks as the number-one series in French Canada. This past week, it gained viewers, increasing viewers to 597,000 from 579,000 the week before. But rather than being the fourth-most popular program of the week, it was the eleventh-most popular program of the week.
